2020_May 25

Row 3 was onions and kale which has outlived its life span.  Mostly now, this bed needs transformed.  The *indeterminate* tomatoes in the center will grow up sandwiched between the two cattle panels for corralling.  On the remainder of the bed -to the north- since it is the shady side will be good for lettuces or perhaps ...?...; on the south side will be good for pretty much any short things (...like?)

Arugula going to seed could be saved...

Onion wasn't harvested in time; could eat the shoots or plant them somewhere

Walking onion starts.  Plant or eat?

I don't like this kind of onion much.  It's great when green, so appreciable for sure, but the puffball seeds ...well they are easy to harvest...  Planting, transplanting all OK but more time consuming than planting those walking starts.  Takes longer to mature, but not necessarily a "problem"...  Jury is out, but impression is less favorable at the moment than the "walkers".

More fennel weeds, unruly onions, and it looks like some endive which wasn't eaten before getting out of hand.  I might also point out here that the aisles are clover...  This is a mixed blessing we prefer - the bees love it as do snakes and spiders.  Habitat for nature is awesome...  We deal with the added perception of chaos which comes along with it.

Spinach going to seed behind some endive which got away.  I would like the spinach seed; am kind of over endive (?) ...possibly...

Something is molesting the bush beans :-(

Any clues what?  I think slugs, but possibly more than one critter.  We need to come out at night and check it out then.  Gather information ~

Kale seeds need to be collected

Troutback lettuce.  One of our faves until Crisp Mint came along...

Yet more kale.  Sheesh!

Fennel weeds are in the way of ...I planted cucumbers and winter squash in the center here between the two cattle panels, and bush beans on the outside of that, with beets on the borders.  The bush beans are not taking, due to the infestation of whatever, so what next/instead?  Carrots?

Couple Hearts of Gold Cantaloupe...

Started on April 20, 2020 in the greenhouse

You don't know what you are looking at here, but tucked in under the fennel weeds are some asparagus weeds.  WTF?!  This is shocking and pleasing.  We adore asparagus, and want to carefully transplant these to the official asparagus bed this fall.  Woo hoo!

Poor bush beans :-(

Back to the onions.  There are actually indeterminate tomatoes planted behind the onions, in the center of the bed.  They will grow up sandwiched between the two cattle panels.  This is the north side of the bed.  On the south side, I have planted determinate (short) tomatoes in cages.  This gets pretty congested, but I have done it before and (despite saying I'd never do it again) am doing it again.  It's an issue of overplanting, inability to throw away good starts, a love of tomatoes, a shortage of space, and the lack of a better idea.
